THE MAHI are here!!!!! Saturday what a beautiful
day. The weatherman was way off on this
one....but for the better. We left early and
dropped our lines in at 8:30. We had our first
mahi hooked up within 10 minutes. We had action
for most of the day with medium sized gaffer
mahi, skipjack tuna, and a couple of wahoo
bites. We missed a sailfish and with all that
action it was a great day.
Reports from up and down the dock were mixed.
Some had a handful, some had double digits
fishing, and for some fishing was spotty
depending on where you were. Grass is beginning
to form well and things should take off within
the next couple of weeks. Other boats that had
good days were James Joyce, Dancing Outlaw,
Runoff, and Carolina Times. Plenty of boats are
running so grab your friends and family and
enjoy a great time with the Morehead City
charter fishing fleet.
Inshore fishing has also kicked off with
bluefish, Spanish mackerel, king mackerel, along
with near shore bottom fishing. Grouper opens
May 1st (vermillion snapper is open now), black
sea bass open June 1st so book now. We have
weekday slots and a few weekends still
available. The coast is clear and warm so come
on down...Lets go catching!! |

Saturday
was another beautiful day on the water with
plenty of action up and down the break, There
was a good wahoo bite, a few blackfin tuna, and
a couple of mahi were reported. We had plenty of
bites but had a tough time staying hooked. We
did take one nice wahoo and finished or day with
our first sailfish of the season. We also saw at
least two marlin free jumping. All in it was a
pretty day! The early season run of yellowfin
tuna could be here soon so give us a call and
let’s go fishing. June will be the start of
BLACK SEA BASS season. Book now while dates are
still available |

March Madness is already going on here in
Morehead City!
Another beautiful day allowed us to run to the
Big Rock. We found plenty of nice blackfin tuna
with a few yellowfin tuna mixed in. We also had
a shot at a sailfish but could not get the hook
in. There were also a couple of boats in the
area that had a few wahoo. We also heard of one
mahi taken as well and some amberjack that were
caught jigging. If this weather holds up, the
bite should only continue to improve. Please
give us a call and let’s get out there catching! |

We had a beautiful day for a Gulf Stream trip.
Although it was great just to get out on the
water and wet our lines, we had limited bites.
However, we caught some blackfin tuna, wahoo and
a couple of little tunny (aka false albacore)
which made it a lot of fun. |

Happy new year every one!
We have good news! The national weather service
is predicting a milder season for 2012. Let’s
hope they are correct. Last year saw more wind
than normal but there were still plenty of fish.
Bottom fishing was again fantastic with plenty
of big sea bass, trigger fish, and vermilion
snapper. We expect much the same for 2012. For
those of you that were able to fish for
mahi-mahi last year you know that there was
plenty of action and this should also continue
this season. New for this year, we will be
adding a few overnights to our schedule because
these trips allow for increased catch limits,
plenty of fishing time, and trolling as well as
bottom fishing. Please contact us for details if
you are interested in these trips. Capt. Rick
& Mate Andy |

We are back in the water after spending a few
weeks on the hill doing regular maintenance and
cleaning. The offshore wahoo bite is fantastic,
with many boats catching limits daily. Also
there are some yellowfin tuna and blackfin tuna
on the edge of the Gulf Stream. Near shore the
false albacore have made their fall arrival;
king mackerel should be very close behind.
Spots, croaker and sea mullet are all starting
to appear near shore. Fall is a spectacular time
on the Outer Banks! Gather your friends or
family and come on down, the water is fine and
the fish are biting.
Weather kept us on the dock this weekend; with
the Morehead City Seafood Festival on we gave
away a free ½ day fishing trip, and signed up
several trips. Thank you to all that entered our
drawing, and it was great seeing many familiar
friends and meeting many more new ones.
The winner of our ½ day FREE trip was: Warren
Luckenbach of Jacksonville, NC.
CONGRATULATIONS! |

The
August has been HOT, both figuratively and
literally! Near shore the spanish mackerel, and
bluefish have been tearing up the near shore
boats, as we say here, “all you want”. Bottom
fishing has been fantastic with plenty of black
sea bass, vermillion snapper, triggerfish,
pinkies and big grunts!
The offshore fishing has been outstanding as
well. The mahi are still plentiful with many
limits being taken daily! The sailfish and
marlin bite is still going on as well. The best
news is the wahoo have shown up in very good
numbers. This should only improve as we move
into September and October. Grab your friends
and family for a great day of fishing on the
Crystal Coast. |

The inshore fishing continues to be great! There
are plenty of spanish mackerel and bluefish,
making for a perfect half day of fishing and
some great family fun!
Offshore: Morehead City in July is the time for
sailfish and marlin. Many boats have reported 3
to 5 per day being caught and released! The
mahi (dolphin) fishing continues to provide
reel-screaming action. Add in an occasional
wahoo and you have one of the greatest offshore
experiences ever. Give us a call and we will put
together a great day of fishing! |

The Morehead City fishing continues to be good
both near shore and offshore in the Gulf Stream.
Spanish mackerel and bluefish are plentiful in
and around the inlet for ½ day trips and mahi
(dolphin), sailfish and wahoo are still biting
well offshore on full day trips. |

Saturday we had a great group of Marines
offshore for Military Appreciation Day (MAD). We
also had beautiful seas, sunny skies, and good
fishing. We caught five mahi, one nice king
mackerel, one large false albacore and Jason
Keys had a 64” plus sailfish. There were a
several more knockdowns that just didn’t quite
stay hooked up but kept us busy all day. Folks,
it was both a pleasure and an honor to take
these military men fishing!! |

Jamie Rose party spent a full day with us
offshore. Started out with a few slams but could
not keep the fish on. Not much in the way of
weed lines. Picked away for most of the day and
ended up with FIVE Mahi. Jamie caught and
released his very first Sailfish. Phillip Webb
caught and released a White Marlin (his very
first time off shore), Larry Viverette caught a
Mahi, this was also his first trip! Tommy,
Kenneth and Allen rounded out the team. Pretty
work guys! |

Robert Hailes party joined us for a day of
offshore, nice weather mild seas, clear skies.
Finished the day with NINE nice gaffer dolphin…
lost a couple of real nice fish. Reports from
other boats mentioned a hot blackfin tuna bite
and at the “Rock” a few blue marlin were sighted |

Headed off shore with a great group of marines
from Camp Lejeune fished the water in and around
the Big Rock. There was a lot of boat traffic
due to the tournament going on so we moved back
inside…ended up with FOUR nice gaffer dolphins
and TWO blackfin tuna. Reports from other boats
up and down the dock were about the same…hard
fishing but good fish action up and down the
break! |

Beautiful day! We were blessed with light winds
and almost no wave action at all. We took the
Carson Lee party out for a full day bottom
fishing trip. We did manage to find a couple of
mahi on the way out. We had plenty of action all
day long, triggerfish, grunts, bank bass, and a
nice red grouper. There were black sea bass
everywhere! We could not get away from them with
many of fish in the 2 –3 pound class TWO AT A
TIME! However, with the season closure we had to
put them all back. Oh well that’s fishing…June
1st is just around the corner, and we know where
they live, so come and join us for some great
black sea bass action. Most of the fleet had
mixed bags of mahi, blackfin tuna, and wahoo.
The fishing is great in Morehead City so make
plans now to come on down and join in the fun!

Take A Kid Fishing! As part of the Hillsborough
Sport fishing Club we took a great group of kids
and their chaperones fishing on Saturday.
Bluefish and spanish mackerel were the focus of
the day! The weather was great, light seas and
sunshine and plenty of action to keep everyone
busy and smiling.

Wednesday, we
planed to go bottom fishing with Leon Griffith
an and his party, however it was a little to
rough for that. We stayed near shore, after some
searching we finally found the spanish mackerel
and bluefish on the beach. Also caught a couple
of nice ocean bonita (the good eating ones).
There were also several boats fishing for cobia
and more that a few were caught up and down the
beach.

Tuesday,
we took Leon Griffith and party to Gulf Stream,
weather forecast was for 15-20 knot. winds with
5-7’ seas. Wrong! It was a beautiful day…just
goes to show you never know till you get here!
Lots of action up and down the edge of the
stream, we ended up with 18 nice mahi, a couple
in the mid 20lb class. 6 blackfin tuna , 4 false
albacore, 1 big barracuda ( 40+lb), an a swarm
of hound fish, and a few other fish we lost
during the fight. All in all, another great day
on the Mattie G II!

Monday,
we headed out to the Gulf Stream with William

morning but turned into a good day! Pretty good
bite near the Big Rock, ended up with 10 mahi
(eight mediums and a couple slingers) and one
king mackerel.

Wednesday, made it offshore to the Gulf Stream
with the Shelton’s from Michigan, winds were out
of the NE and it proved to be a little chunkier
than the weather forecast predicted. Still it
was very fishable. Ended up one for two wahoo,
one nice blackfin, one little tunny, and three
small mahi. Scattered grass and a few birds
working but not much action for most of the day,
found a couple pockets of bait and that is where
we found the fish. Things should heat up soon.
There were also a few yellowfin caught last
weekend. As we worked back inside we did find
birds working pods of bluefish. Hope to have an
update Friday after our ½ day trip.
Spring is here let’s go fishing |

Spring is finally here!
Offshore the Gulf Stream is heating up.
There have been good catches of wahoo,
blackfin tuna and a few yellowfin tuna are
showing up too. There are plenty of
amberjacks on the wrecks and breaks. Bottom
fishing continues to be very good even
though there are some closures at this
time. March 31st will see the
opening of our vermillion snapper season (Beeliners).
Be sure to make your reservations early. We
will be heading offshore later this week and
will post a report as soon as we return.
This is the time of year when everything
starts, inshore, offshore, and the Gulf
Stream, so grab a few friends and lets go
fishing!
