The Mattie G II is something of a legend on the Morehead City
Docks. She was one of, if not the first,
multiple person head boats to run from the
Morehead area. The Mattie G II was built by A.
Buck, under the talented guidance of original
owner, Capt.
Leroy Gould, and was finished in 1961.
Capt. Leroy had the
boat set up for 20 passengers and fished
everything out to about 50 miles. After a
couple of ownership changes, the boat was
purchased by its current owners (Leon and Pat
Turner). It was their love for this classic boat
that has led to what the Mattie G II has become
today. |

Capt. Rick Baldwin:
Captain Rick has been working the local North
Carolina waters for over 15 years, and holds a
USCG Masters License. He has also fished
commercially from Maine to the Gulf of Mexico
and up the West Coast to Alaska. With over 35
years of experience, his goal is to provide you
and your group with the safest and most
memorable fishing experience possible. Capt.
Rick has always appreciated the opportunity to
show his customers just how much fun a charter
fishing trip from Morehead City can be.
First Mate Andy Lawing:
Andy has fished the waters around Morehead City
and the Crystal Coast since 1979 recreationally,
commercially, and also as a professional charter
mate. His real love always remains in
sportfishing. Andy believes that there is
nothing any more exciting than to hear line
screaming off a reel from the strike of a wahoo,
mahi-mahi, tuna, or an awesome billfish. He is
also an avid flounder “gigger” which he does
commercially in the Morehead area. His favorite
fish species are wahoo, mahi-mahi, flounder, and
sea mullet. Andy is enthusiastic about helping
anglers get the most out of every fishing
experience and appreciates the opportunity to
show our fishing customers exactly how to catch
the big ones.
Webmaster's Note: Keep in mind that it is the
mate's hard work that can make or break a
charter fishing trip. He gets paid only by your
tips so in North Carolina it is customary to tip
the mate between 15% and 20%.
